Spanish is now the third most spoken language in the world, and is becoming increasingly more popular here in the United States. While French was once the language most often taught as a second language to children in the US, many parents are now teaching children to speak Spanish instead. These parents realize that a fluency in Spanish will be very beneficial to their children in the future.
Children should begin learning a second language as early as possible because a child’s brain is capable of storing different languages in different areas, something that an adult brain is incapable of. So it is much easier for a child to learn to speak everyday Spanish than it is for an adult.
And these days, it is very easy to teach children Spanish. There are all sorts of Spanish children’s books, online tutorials, learn to speak Spanish audios CDs and other helpful tools that will have your kids chattering away in Spanish in a matter of months.
For some reason, however, there are still those parents that remain skeptical about introducing their children to a second language before they have mastered English. Although they realize the benefits of their children learning to speak everyday Spanish, they simply do not believe that learning it at a young age is a good idea, and that they should wait until they are older.
A common misconception about teaching children to speak Spanish, or another second language, while they are young is that the child’s ability to speak English will become compromised. Of course, the opposite is true. Children who learn two or more languages while they are young end up with a far better command of English than do those who did not learn a second language.
Studies have shown that teaching children to speak Spanish has a very positive impact on their performance in school. Children with multiple languages are often more creative, possess greater problem solving skills and perform better academically than children with just one language.
Another popular misconception is that teaching very young children a second language will result in a major delay in their speech. This is not true because children that are exposed to two languages develop at almost the same rate as those only exposed to one. While it’s possible that a bilingual child may take a little more time to process two languages before they begin to speak, the whole point is negligible because there is no exact time for a child to begin speaking.
Teaching children to speak Spanish is an easy way to help prepare them for the future, so do what you can to help them learn while they are still young. Check out the many tools and resources that are available, like kid-friendly learn to speak Spanish audio CDs and online tutorials. Just get something that is interactive and fun, and your child will be speaking Spanish before you know it.
