Getting Started In Homeschooling Your Child

Better known as home education, home schooling is not a new idea; at one time it was the only kind of schooling available to most children. It has been gaining in popularity as an educational model for children who are not happy with their local school system. Parents who have the time and resources to do so will often decide to teach their children at home instead.

From 1964 through 1981, the school system came under great scrutiny from the public. Parents and teachers together accused the school systems of improperly teaching children and the schools just had too many students to slow down for one or two children with disabilities in learning, and the school had to teach at a certain pace to maintain their schedule.

Parents whose children were enrolled in these crowded schools made the assessment that they would be better able to provide their children with a good education than could the public schools and thus began the homeschooling movement in this country. In most states, an “umbrella school” is available - this is a standardized suggested curriculum for home schooling parents, including tests; the state often provides the necessary school supplies for students and gives the child a monthly checkup on their academic progress. The program is designed to give home schooled children as close as possible to a standard scholastic environment.

In order for a family to home school their children, the parent has to find a certified correspondence school that will accept them. There are compulsory school attendance laws, which have to be followed. The school then has an approved curriculum that must be adhered to.

It is a good idea if you home school your children to contact other home schoolers, and have a once a week class room, and use community resources as field trips, such as museums, community centers, athletics, and parks. This gives the children the change to socialize with other children of the same age. Socializing is one of the key tools for home schooled children. Without children socializing with others, they will not know what to do when they are around people, and will become withdrawn later in life.

Some parents wonder if they home school their children how will it affect them getting into college. All states do permit home school parents to issue a high school transcript for their child; however, the College Board does suggest that parents keep detailed records and portfolios. These records are very important and should always be kept in a safe place. Home schoolers are now allowed to attend over 900 different colleges and universities.

The whole idea of home schooling is that children’s natural curiosity will spur them to learn and pursue their areas of interest.

It has been stated that children who have been home schooled are usually way ahead of their classmates that attend regular schools, and that home schoolchildren are even smarter.

Time Management Tips For Students

Thursday 25 September 2008 @ 5:14 pm
by Jason Tickbourne

We all complain about being short of time and every day there are 1001 things we want to get done and invariably we never get everything done. There is a limit to the time we have available and a limit to how much we can get done in that time but time management helps us make the most of the time we do have.

Few of us have more time than we have things to do. Some tasks we have to put off till tomorrow or another time but some tasks are time critical and have to be done today. Students live in a time critical world. Papers have to be done on time and incomplete work or work handed in late is never going to endear you to those who matter.

For students time management is a crucial skill to be learned and understood. There are so many distractions in student life that it is easy to forget all about the work until it is getting to be too late to complete it in time. Planning is crucial and setting a time period to complete the work in is vital to avoid being overwhelmed with the task.

With a plan of work you should have allowed a reasonable time to complete any part of that work and have the finsihed material ready to be delivered on time with the knowledge that you have done a decent job of it. Without a plan you may well end up rushing to complete the work when your friends are finished and relaxing.

It may sound boring but an organized schedule helps you and actually keeps you focused on the important tasks. It should also enable you to spend a little more time on some parts of your work if you need to without this meaning that some work doesn’t ever seem to get finished.

Time management and scheduling of work is not a task to be taken lightly. It is important and it enables you to enjoy your free time knowing the work is on schedule and will be completed on time. Those who play it by ear will find themselves rushing as the deadline approaches while you relax and enjoy yourself.

Speechmaking Essentials: Pace,Poise and Polish.

Wednesday 24 September 2008 @ 1:39 pm
by Jane K.Thomas

How’s your spelling? Pretty good? Then I reckon that you’d say that there was only one P in speechmaking. However, if you intend to make a speech, you had better remember that there are, in fact, three Ps in speechmaking - Pace, Poise and Polish.

And if you can remember to make use of all three in your speechmaking then you are guaranteed to impress each and every audience that you address.

Pace. This is a ‘make or break’ P. Get this wrong and your audience will either be bored to tears and will be struggling to hide their yawns from you OR they will be nudging their close neighbour to ask whether he heard what you said because they missed it.

Have you ever listened to a speaker who had been taught that speaking slowly allowed the audience to understand what you were saying better? If you have, you’ll know that there is a world of difference between easily understandable and excruciatingly slow! Even the most interesting topic will be made boring by a slow drawl and your audience will be itching to scream “speed it up, won’t you? I have to be in work tomorrow morning!”

Delivering your speech too slowly is guaranteed to make even the most polite audience lose their patience with you.

If you pitch your pace too fast, on the other hand, listening to you will become too much like hard work and many people in your audience will simply lose the thread of what you are saying. Your job as a speaker is to make the audiences’ task of listening to your speech as easy as possible and you should be trying as hard as you possibly can to alloow your audience the luxury of simply relaxing and letting your words seep effortlessly into their minds.

Deliver your words slowly enough for your audience to be able to easily absorb what you are saying yet fast enough to avoid your delivery becoming tedious. Remember that by varying the pace of your presentation, you will be able to retain the interest and attention of those listening to you.

Poise. Most speakers only focus on the subject matter of their speeches and work long and hard on the actual construction of their speech. Hours are spent collecting information, arranging it into the correct sequence, choosing the most appropriate opening and closing words and making sure that the rhythm and flow of their delivery is just right.

And of course, all that effort is certainly required to produce an excellent speech. But that’s not the end of it. How you present yourself is just as important as how you present your words.

Run through this checklist immediately before you step out in front of your audience:

1. Is your clothing presentable, clean, appropriate and arranged correctly? 2. Is your hair neatly combed? 3. Does your body language convey the right impression?

Always bear in mind that your audience will start forming their opinion of you from the first moment that they see you and long before you have a chance to woo them with your words. Your poise - that is, the visual impression given to the audience - will influence their first impression of you and that is something that you must pay great attention to .

Make sure that your impression is a positive one.

Polish. This is what will make a good speech great! It is also the element that will be of the most help in ridding yourself of any pre-speech nervousness. Proper preparation is the key to most things in life and when speaking in public thorough preparation is nothing less than vital.

Rehearse your speech in front of a mirror, or better still, in front of your friends and family. Become very familiar with the content of your speech, the most effective style of delivery, the incorporation of suitable gestures - anything that you feel needs to be practised until it becomes second nature.

Closely scrutinise your stage outfit and pay detailed attention to your posture. How you stand will certainly display any outward signs of tension you may be feeling so don’t lean, don’t hunch, don’t slouch and don’t allow yourself lose concentration. Polish your performance until it gleams! In spite of all these efforts, you must strive to appear relaxed, confident and in control at all times - even if you don’t feel it.

By remembering the three Ps in ’speechmaking’ - Pace, Poise and Polish, any audience will be enthralled, entertained and enraptured by your performance - guaranteed!
